About Aiken
The West Side Bowery has been proud to grow alongside Aiken over the last 25 years. We realize how lucky we are to get to see Aiken grow in a way that has been beneficial to everyone in the county, respecting and cherishing our town's history while embracing the new growth in Aiken, making our town an ideal place to live.
Like most Southern towns, we are proud of our town's heritage and the annual events and traditions that come with living in Aiken. Thanks to the town's mild temperatures year-round and the railroad, residents of Charleston visited the city during the summer months to escape Charleston's heat and malaria problems. Meanwhile, people visited from up north to enjoy Aiken's mild winters. It was these northerners who also brought the first thoroughbreds to Aiken, beginning our town's long history with equestrian racing.
This includes such events as Aiken's Triple Crown held in March. This showcase of equestrian sport begins with The Aiken Trials, followed by the Steeplechase Events, and ends with polo. The proceeds from these events are donated to local charities.
Aiken's famous Hopelands Gardens is one of many gardens and historic sites in and around downtown Aiken. It houses the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum, a tribute to Aiken's contribution to equestrian sports.
Our downtown area continues to grow and flourish, offering several quality restaurants and shops for people looking to spend some time strolling the historic boulevards of Aiken. This is one of several reasons people have started staying here in Aiken during The Masters, held just across the river in Augusta.
