About Us
When we first opened our restaurant over 25 years ago, downtown Aiken was just starting to show signs of growth. It was the County seat and had five banks located here, along with other professional offices. To us, this meant one thing: all of these people needed somewhere to eat lunch every day.
Fortunately for us, our building owners didn't think much of the area, charging us only one dollar for our first year's rent. Our owner, Sam Erb, saw potential in the area and proceeded into unchartered waters. We watched our cash flow carefully and our gamble paid off, helping our hole-in-the-wall spot become the successful restaurant it is today.
We worked hard on our piece of the downtown pie, as well as promoting downtown Aiken at every chance we had. Sam Erb was instrumental in bringing Main Street, U.S.A. into Aiken, and has always had a hand in the events and civic groups such as Aiken Downtown Development Association, the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, the Accommodations Tax Committee for the City, the Aiken Corporation, and has been a member of the State Board of the South Carolina Restaurant Association for twenty years, currently residing as its President.
The West Side Bowery is very proud of Aiken's accomplishments, and our commitment to the growth of Aiken will remain as long as we have this business and make Aiken our home. We wish to thank our patrons for their continued support over the years, helping The West Side Bowery to become an Aiken institution.
